I may be over 40, but...
It is now 31 days to sabbatical and 38 days to the trip. The reality that this is happening is starting to sink in. Up to now, it's all felt like a dream, even with all the specific plans.
Not much has changed since I last wrote. This morning I found out that a friend has a bunch of single, male friends in Sydney who she's going to hook me up with. Could be the solution to that old pain of dining out alone, the only thing I really dislike about solo travel. The only other news is that I got a great new lens for my camera that will let me get some stuff I've missed in the past. Although I may take a film camera body for backup, my plan is to take everything on digital, including underwater stuff. A small portion of a surprise windfall will go toward an underwater housing for my little point-and-shoot digital.
About the windfall, a long-lost cousin on my father's side of the family sent me some money. I never expected to be thought of that way by anyone on his side. The money is enough to pay for the camera housing in addition to another dream trip: swimming with whales. This is most likely to be in the Caribbean, but might be in Tonga. Stay tuned.
The countdown goes on.
